The government's lip service in praise of decentralised administration and local governance is sadly not backed up by action: Deputy Mayor Narysh

Ahmed Narysh, the Deputy Mayor of Male' City has said that the current government's lip service in praise of decentralised administration and local governance has so far not been seen in their actions, and that the government's continued attempts to undermine the Male' City Council is shameful and disappointing.

"The government had lied to the people when they first introduced buses in Male'. After promising electric buses, they brought diesel buses. We have gathered a lot of information on massive corruption in that deal. When there was an uproar and criticism of the Transport Ministry, President Solih had brought a handful of electric buses, and have now shipped them off to Villimale' in an attempt to get votes in his upcoming ruling party primary. What is transpiring is wrong on many levels. There was no consultation with us. The people of Villimale' are also in the dark. The buses themselves were smuggled onto Villimale' at night like criminals do. President Solih is abusing his position by manipulating state funds, resources and policies to win an internal party primary. And, the are clearly violating the law."
