We had no choice but to annul the contract with WAMCO: Mayor Muizzu

The Mayor of Male', Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the recent decision by the Male' City Council to annul the agreement with WAMCO was taken because they had no viable and practical option to continue their affiliation with the company. He made the statement at his interview last night to the Havaasa programme on Dhivehi Channel.

"The law stipulates that sweeping and cleaning the city's streets are responsibilities entrusted to the Council. There is a provision to outsource water, electricity and sewerage services but not for cleaning the streets. In spite of these legal complications, the City Council had previously entered into an agreement with WAMCO. We were paying them dutifully, in accordance with the agreement. Sadly, they had not been undertaking their contractual obligations fully, with numerous complaints coming through to us from concerned residents over the state of the city's streets. They were simply not cleaning the streets regularly. As a result, our staffers have had to go out and clean the streets."

The current agreement with WAMCO, which was signed by the previous Council on 26th December 2016 ends on 26th December of this year. The City Council has decided not to renew the agreement.
