The Male' City Council has commenced repair and renovation work on the city's mosque, utilising the funds raised at last weekend's 'Beautiful Mosques' event in Male'.
The event, which raised over Seven hundred Thousand Rufiyaa, was held to offset major funding shortfalls in managing the city's mosques. While the annual mosque repair and renovation cost is estimated at over 10 Million Rufiyaa, the government had refused to supplement the annual allocation of One Million Rufiyaa. While the City Council was able to enhance the outlay by a further Two Million Rufiyaa from their revenue, the remaining shortfall had led to major concerns, especially in the lead up to the 1444 Ramadan.
Events over the weekend, including activities at Artificial Beach and a telethon, had raised over Seven hundred Thousand Rufiyaa. The City Council decided to utilise the funds immediately to ensure that maximum work could be completed in time for the holy month of Ramadan, which commences at the end of March.
Earlier, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Mayor of Male' City had shared detailed information on the pending repair work, including the names of the mosques. He urged the government to reconsider their position, and to urgently allocate additional funds for the important undertaking.
