The Male' City Council has resolved to operate a temporary public market for the benefit of residents in Hulhumale' Phase II. The motion was tabled at today's 90th sitting of the Male' City Council by the Mayor of Male', Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Noting that the government had continued to refuse the devolution of Hulhumale' municipal and local governance administration to the Male' City Council, the Mayor said that the City Council must abide by the law and ensure that they continued to provide services to the residents of Hulhumale'. "Hulhumale' is a part of Male' City", he emphasised.
Dr. Muizzu noted that nearly 10,000 families were now living in Hulhumale' Phase II, and that it is a major burden for them to commute between Phase II and Phase I or Male' to get regular provisions such as fruits and vegetables. He went on to note that such difficulties are compounded during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Mayor shared his vision to operate the temporary market as a cost-effective enterprise for the Male' City Council, and emphasised the need to plan ahead. He added that the feedback of residents in Hulhumale' Phase II had prompted him to table the motion.
Councilor for Hulhumale', Ibrahim Shujau said that he had held preliminary deliberations on this proposal, and that the Hulhumale' Development Corporation (HDC) had indicated their willingness to work with the City Council on this proposal. He added that the operation of such a market would benefit thousands of families and that it would be a welcome development for residents in his constituency.
