Mayor Muizzu urges government to waive-off parking fines issued without providing alternatives to the public

Recalling the government's campaign pledge to the people to stop issuing parking fines without increasing the existing parking capacity in the capital, the Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the government to waive-off parking fines issued to motorists in the past 4 1/2 years with immediate effect.

Speaking at the first public consultation for the year, the Mayor said that parking was becoming a huge problem, and that urgent solutions were needed. He said that blindly issuing hefty fines was not the solution to the problem, and that people have no choice but to park randomly given the lack of designated parking spaces across the city. He added that disorganised parking was also leading to massive difficulties and damage to expensive vehicles.

Dr. Muizzu said that the 8 parking buildings that the Male' City Council had proposed to install across the city could go a long way to ease the pressure on parking spaces and that they were simply waiting for the government to give them the approval to begin the project.
