Malé, Maldives – Malé City Council has officially named the public square currently under development in the Maafannu area as Maafannu Maizaan , following a vote by an absolute majority during the Council’s 195th session held on Wednesday.
The square is being developed on land cleared from a former cemetery site, and marks one of the Council’s key urban transformation initiatives aimed at enhancing public spaces.
Once completed, Maafannu Maizaan will feature several recreational and community-friendly amenities. These include a 3-on-3 basketball court in the current southwest corner parking zone, parking for 295 bicycles, and a dedicated green space for public ceremonies and gatherings. A separate 496-acre area will be designated for fitness and exercise activities.
Spanning a total of 36,153 acres, the square will also be transformed into a green hub with extensive tree planting and landscaping, as part of the Council’s broader plan to improve environmental conditions and public wellbeing. A modern irrigation system is also planned to support the greenery.
Malé City Mayor Adam Azim expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that the development of Maafannu Maizaan will significantly enhance the quality of life for residents in the area. He emphasized that community participation will be central to the project, particularly during the tree planting phase.
Work on Maafannu Maizaan is expected to begin within the next week, with the Council committing to keeping the square open 24 hours a day to ensure it remains an accessible space for all.
“This project isn’t just about urban renewal; it’s about creating shared spaces that bring people together and improve everyday life,” Mayor Azim said.
