Jetty Wall Cleaning and Restoration Underway as Part of Malé City Beautification Drive

As part of ongoing efforts to make Malé a cleaner and more welcoming city, Malé City Council has begun cleaning and restoring the jetty walls around the capital. This initiative has been identified as a high priority by the Council in its broader city beautification program.

Mayor Adam Azim stated that maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the city is essential, especially as Malé serves as the capital and a central destination for both locals and international visitors. “We must keep the city attractive and respectable: this starts with taking care of the spaces people see and use every day,” he said.

The jetty walls, which are located along popular coastal roads and walkways, have recently shown signs of defacement, including unauthorized drawings and writings that are inconsistent with public standards. These walls are frequently seen by children and families, making it crucial to maintain their cleanliness and integrity.

Mayor Azim emphasized that once the cleaning work is completed, all such inappropriate markings will be permanently removed. He also reminded the public that it is strictly prohibited to write, paste, or draw anything on public walls—especially content that is offensive or damaging to the city's image.

In addition to the jetty wall restoration, the Mayor raised concerns about improper disposal of waste in public areas, including garbage being placed on trees and signboards along the streets. “These actions damage the appearance of our city and harm the environment. I urge all residents to act responsibly and respect public spaces,” he said.

This work is part of a series of environmental and urban improvement initiatives introduced by Mayor Azim since taking office. Under his leadership, Malé City has witnessed several positive developments aimed at making the city a safer, cleaner, and more satisfying place to live.

The jetty wall project is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing transformation of the capital, reinforcing civic pride and improving the city’s overall atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
