As we commemorate International Youth Day 2024, under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” we are reminded of the profound role that young people play in shaping the future of our world. This theme highlights the intersection of digital transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing how the energy and innovation of our youth are vital to accelerating progress across these global objectives.

In the Maldives, the youth have always been at the forefront of change, driving the transformations that have shaped our nation. Our country's independence is a testament to the leadership and vision of a young generation that led us to sovereignty. Over the years, this spirit of youth-led progress has cultivated a culture of education that has resulted in the establishment of universities and the provision of free education up to the graduate level. The democracy and decentralization we enjoy today are also the fruits of youth activism and determination.

As we navigate the digital age, the role of young people has become even more crucial. They are often referred to as “digital natives,” adept at adopting and innovating with new technologies. In this era, where digitalization is one of the key transitions with catalytic effects across the SDGs, our youth are not just users but also developers and innovators shaping global digital trends. It is essential that we empower them through digital innovation and create an environment that fosters their growth and potential.

In Male’, our youth are the catalysts for the ongoing transformation of our society. By actively engaging young people in the development process, we can build a civil society that is disciplined, respectful, and focused on sustainable development. It is imperative that we think beyond the entertainment aspect of social media and harness the power of digital platforms to drive meaningful progress.

As we look towards the future, my wish is that every young person in Male’ will be able to face life’s challenges with confidence, secure in the knowledge that they have access to shelter, healthy food, and a decent standard of living. By recognizing their contributions and addressing the challenges they face, we can work together to build a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future for all.
