The Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that mosques must take pride of place as the most cherished places in any Muslim society, and that mosques must always be a sanctuary of safety, peace and enlightenment for all.
Speaking at Thursday night's first public consultation of the City Council for this year, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that, since he and his team had assumed responsibilty over the City Council, they had spent over 16 million Rufiyaa on the maintenance of the city's mosques.
"We had a budget of only 1 million. We therefore had to launch the Beautiful Mosques initiative, including the telethon. Members of the public came forward to donate an additional 1 million. Well-wishers and responsible members of the business community also helped tremendously. We also utilised a large portion of the City Council's revenue budget. In all, we have been able to do a lot of work on this front, and we are pleased with what we have achieved as a team, and thank you all for supporting us in this noble initiative."
The Mayor confirmed that the ongoing renovation and restoration work for on selected mosques would be completed in time for the start of Ramadan.
