Cat shelter will include facilities to neuter and care for them: Male' City Council

The Male' City Council has revealed that the proposed cat shelter will include facilities to neuter and care for them. The City Council decided to establish a shelter that can house up to 1000 cats.

At today's 100th sitting of the City Council, the Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu elaborated that MVR 1.9 million had to be set aside from the budget, and that it would suffice for upgrading the earmarked building, as well as purchasing veterinary equipment for neutering. He added that staffing and other expenses would also be included in the proposed budget.

Reehan Nazim, Councilor for Central Galolhu Constituency and Chair of the Environment Committee of MCC spoke on the importance of neutering stray cats and keeping them in the facility. "They will be fed and cared for in the shelter, rather than relocating them to the streets of Male'", she said.

Councilor Saif Fathih said that MVR 1,500 would be charged for neutering a cat, and that the cost includes all expenses to care for the cat thereafter.

In today's sitting, the Mayor suggested the vacant bulding in FIshermen's Park in Male' as a temporary building to house the cat shelter, and added that accommodation for the experts to undertake this endeavour would be included in the costing. He assured that the programme would proceed in accordance with regulations, including public finance guidelines.

Each cat neutered under the programme will be fitted with a microchip, and will be collared and registered for identification purposes.

The new cat shelter's neutering clinic will have xray and blood examination facilities, which can also be utilised by pet owners.
