In response to heavy rain forecasts, Male' City Council has placed over 4,500 sandbags across flood-prone areas in the past 72 hours. The initiative, which began on Tuesday, aims to mitigate potential flood damage and ensure the safety of residents.
Mayor Adam Azim, after inspecting the council's efforts, emphasized the city’s commitment to working closely with relevant institutions and the public. He expressed gratitude to organizations such as the MNDF, Police Service, Red Crescent, RDC, NDMA, and other public works agencies for their vital support. “Our priority is the safety and security of our people, and we will continue to cooperate fully with all stakeholders to achieve this,” the Mayor stated.
Ali Aiman, Male' City Council's disaster committee chair, stated that a task force has been established under the Mayor’s direction and Sandbags are being prepared using sand collected from various sources, managed by the council’s public services department. the council has also collaborated with the Ministry of Cities, local government and public works and the Maldives National Defense Force to cut a river channel near the post office building, enhancing drainage efficiency.
As of Tuesday night, sandbags have been strategically deployed in key areas, with efforts ongoing to provide additional coverage. The council is determined to minimize disaster-related damage and improve living conditions in flood-prone neighborhoods, particularly in the Male area.
The Mayor encouraged all council employees to continue working collaboratively toward these goals, ensuring the city remains resilient in the face of natural disasters.
