The 37th National Poets' Day was marked with a special event, An Evening with Poets, held at Sultan Park on Thursday. The gathering was hosted by Mayor Adam Azim and honored the rich tradition of poetry in the Maldives.
This year's Poets' Day was dedicated to Abdullah Sodhiq (Soadhbe), a renowned Dhivehi poet and writer, who has been awarded the prestigious Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin. The celebration included heartfelt tributes to Soadhbe’s remarkable contributions to Dhivehi literature.
Soadhbe’s legacy was highlighted with the presentation of one of his poems during the event. Additionally, two original poems celebrating the work of the Malé City Council were recited by Aishath Gulisthan and Rimana Ibrahim. These poems were written by Mohammed Saleem and Ahmed Shaz (TajuBe).
North Machangolhi Constituency Councilor Saeeda Rashad shared reflections on Soadhbe’s life, emphasizing his significant contributions to the nation and the importance of commemorating his work. “Soadhbe is a Dhivehi poet and writer who has done tremendous service to Dhivehi literature. It is essential to remember him on such an occasion,” she said.
Villa College lecturer and historian Ahmed Shakir (Kashima) also spoke about Soadhbe’s influence, describing him as a guiding figure for contemporary Dhivehi poets. “Soadhbe was a master of traditional poetic styles and deeply respected by today’s poets,” Shakir remarked.
The event was well-attended by council staff, councilors, and officials, creating a fitting tribute to the enduring power of poetry and the cultural contributions of Abdullah Sodhiq.
