City Council Cleans Over 12,500 Drains in Major Effort to Prevent Flooding

More than 12,566 drains across 107 streets have been cleaned during the first five months of this year, according to the city council. This large-scale operation is part of an ongoing initiative to keep the streets clean, reduce flooding, and ensure safe passage for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Mayor Adam Azim praised the dedication of city council workers, stating that they are working tirelessly to improve the city's infrastructure. “Our employees are already doing a tremendous amount of work to keep the streets safe and accessible,” he said. “But their efforts need the full cooperation of the public.”

Mayor urged residents not to dump garbage into street drains, warning that such actions block water flow and contribute to frequent flooding during rainfall. “Flooding happens because drains are clogged with waste. When it rains, trash and dirt spread across the roads,” he explained.

Mayor Azim also announced an ambitious goal: to clean all street drains in Male' City by the end of the year. His broader vision is to create a cleaner, more beautiful city that its residents can be proud of.

“We want to give people the streets they deserve — clean, safe, and pleasant,” Azim said. “With the public’s help, we can make Male' City a model for urban cleanliness.”
