Over the past year, the number of dark and poorly lit roads in the city has significantly decreased, thanks to ongoing efforts by Malé City Council to improve public safety and infrastructure.
Council has been actively working to install more streetlights across various neighborhoods, with a special focus on narrow streets where residents previously faced difficulties due to poor visibility. The aim is to make streets safer and more accessible, especially during the night.
Mayor Adam Azim highlighted that many streets had been neglected for years, leading to damaged roads and a lack of lighting, which caused serious inconvenience and even injuries for pedestrians. "We have received many complaints about accidents and difficulties due to the lack of lighting at night," said Mayor Azim. "Our goal is to relieve these burdens and create a more comfortable environment for everyone in the city."
As part of the Council’s broader initiative to improve public spaces, lighting has also recently been installed in cemeteries and at the Artificial Beach, enhancing both safety and usability in these areas after dark.
Mayor Azim emphasized the importance of collaboration and continued effort to achieve these improvements, stating that the City Council is committed to making Malé a safer and more livable city for all.
